Engineers measure a bridge by one number before any other: its span — the distance it covers between two supports, with nothing holding up what's in between. The best spans have always relied on doing more with those two endpoints, rather than adding supports along the way.

That gap in the middle can look like the structure's weak point. It's actually the real accomplishment: proof of how much distance a design can cover using only its two ends.

The great cantilever bridges pushed weight outward toward those endpoints instead of stacking pillars beneath the length between them — real distance, carried by trusting the ends rather than the middle.

This ring runs on the same principle: one continuous line of stones held at its two farthest points, the space between them carried by that same trust — a distance covered clean, with nothing filling the gap.
