Ambit collection
Product details
In ancient Rome, an ambitus was the strip of open ground left around a house, the measured margin where one property ended and the next began. The word comes from the Latin for "a going around." English took two words from it: "ambit," the boundary of what lies within a person's reach, and "ambition," which began as the walk a candidate made around the city to gather support.
Ambit draws that boundary in stone. An oval stone holds the center, and a band of small round stones circles it, each one placed in sequence to trace the full outline of the oval. Four square-cut stones stand at the outer limits, one at each point of the compass, each set on its corner. The oval is the ground inside the line, and the four squares are the markers that show how far it reaches.
